The leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant are dried and crushed into a fine powder. The henna powder is combined with a liquid to turn it into a paste that will adhere to your skin and with an acid to release the dye. At Mihenna, we use fresh distilled water, all-natural eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and sugar. Our ingredients are all-natural, with no hidden chemicals to keep your skin safe and healthy.

Absolutely! Our products are 100% natural and free from synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and artificial additives. We use only pure henna leaves and other natural ingredients to ensure you receive a safe and authentic henna experience.

Our henna is free from PPD (para-phenylenediamine), ammonia, peroxide, and any other harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional hair dyes. We are committed to providing high-quality, chemical-free henna.

No. Henna tattoos will only last between 1 and 3 weeks, depending on location and how well you care for them. Because henna is a dye that absorbs into your skin cells, the faster you lose skin cells, the faster your henna stain will disappear. We’ve got some tips to make it last.

  • Before you get your henna paste applied, exfoliate. Get off as much dead skin from the area as you can.
  • Wash the area to remove your natural oils, and then fully dry your skin.
  • Avoid water for the first few hours. Don’t jump in the shower right after you get your tattoo.
  • After you have your gorgeous henna, do not exfoliate! Your dead skin cells will naturally fall off but try to avoid encouraging them.
  • Moisturize the area to keep your skin healthier for longer. We recommend using coconut oil to keep the area luscious.

Henna paste will naturally become less effective over time. The stain won’t be as dark, and ingredients may separate depending on what the henna is made out of. Fortunately, there is no health hazard or danger related to expired henna. You can easily extend the life of your henna paste by storing it in the freezer for up to 3 months.

This frequently asked question is more complex than it seems due to misconceptions about henna. Let’s break it down into a few different areas - pure henna, brown henna paste, and black henna.

  • Pure henna dye is made from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. The leaves are dried and crushed into a powder. The henna plant has a very low potential for skin allergies, according to the Dermatology Online Journal. However, this powder alone isn’t going to stick to your skin or create beautiful designs.
  • Brown henna paste is made by mixing the powder with at least one type of liquid in order to make it adhere to your skin. Most reactions are due to these additional ingredients. It’s important to read the ingredients and test the henna paste in a small area if you have sensitive skin.
  • Black henna is a misnomer and does not actually contain any powder from the Lawsonia inermis plant. It often contains p-phenylenediamine (PPD), also known as coal tar. PPD is considered a contact allergen and has a long list of symptoms you can read more about on DermNet. Black henna is not common in the US, Canada, or the UK, but it can be found abroad. Be sure to only get henna tattoos when the paste is brown or reddish-brown, earthy color.

At Mihenna, our all-natural henna paste is made from fresh distilled water, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and sugar. While it is unlikely that the majority of people would have any skin reaction, please test on a small patch if you have frequent skin sensitivity or irritation.

But even natural henna paste should not be consumed. If you, your child, or your pet ingests henna paste, you will likely have an upset stomach and experience diuretic effects.

Lawsonia inermis, the plant that creates henna, grows in northern Africa and western and southern Asia. Various cultures across Africa—especially Morocco—the Middle East, and South Asia, including Pakistan and India, have developed traditional uses for this plant.

From medicines made out of the roots to dye for hair and skin made out of the dried, powdered leaves, Lawsonia inermis rose in popularity. Different traditions developed in these regions, but almost everyone ended up using the dye to stain designs on their hands and feet.

Henna tattoos have distinct motifs based on where they originated. Read more about the history of henna in our previous posts.

If you use natural henna, then yes! Creating fake freckles with henna helps you avoid the sun damage that can come with trying to darken your real freckles, and they last longer than creating freckles with makeup that you need to reapply every day.

Henna stains look orange when you first reveal them, but during the first twenty-four hours, they will continue to darken to a nice, earthy brown color. Avoid washing your face for the first 5 hours to allow the stain to set in.

Many factors affect the quality of henna stain - skin composition, temperature, humidity, and aftercare. If, after 24 hours, your henna freckles are not showing, we recommend thoroughly exfoliating, washing, and drying your face to remove all oils and makeup.

In an air-conditioned room, allow the henna to stay on your face for longer (up to 12 hours). Do not apply water to your face for 4 - 5 hours after removing the henna. Regularly moisturize to help the stains last longer.

To create a clean base, start by thoroughly washing and drying your face. Then, apply dots of henna paste across your nose and cheeks in varying sizes and placements. Allow the paste to dry for 2 to 12 hours, depending on how dark you want your fake freckles to be.

Use coconut oil to remove the dried henna paste and simultaneously moisturize your skin. The henna freckles will darken for 24 hours. Finally, you’ll have that sun-kissed look everyone is craving!

Unfortunately, the henna freckles will not show up on very deep skin tones.

Make sure to apply your freckles in a scattered pattern for a natural look; Applying the freckles in sets of three will help accomplish this. Also, be sure to add some freckles to your forehead and chin to complete the sun-kissed look.

Avoid arranging your freckles in a grid-like pattern, as this can make them appear unnatural and give you a doll-like look—unless that's the style you're aiming for!

2 to 6 days with proper care. Moisturizing daily and avoiding exfoliation will help your henna freckles last longer. We recommend using coconut oil when exposed to water to increase the longevity of your henna freckles.

Instructions

What You Need:

  • 1 cup of distilled warm water or freshly brewed black tea
  • Glass bowl
  • Spoon
  • Cling wrap
  • Plastic gloves
  • Shower cap

Steps:

  • Pour the desired amount of henna powder into your bowl and slowly mix it in water or tea until pudding-like consistency is reached.
  • Mix paste until clumps are gone. Cover with cling wrap and let sit for 8 - 10 hours; this will allow for full dye release.
  • Once ready, apply henna paste directly to clean, damp hair with gloved hands.
  • Section your hair and starting from your roots, work the paste evenly through to the ends.
  • Gather your hair on top of your head and cover it completely with a plastic shower cap.
  • After 3 hours, thoroughly rinse your hair with cool water to remove all henna. Wash until water runs clear (do not use shampoo).
  • Use a blow dryer for 10 - 15 minutes.
  • After 24 hours, you can use color-safe shampoo to lock in color. Avoid oil-based conditioners for one week.
  • Hair color will darken and reach full intensity within 48 - 72 hours.

Pro Tips:

  • We recommend testing a small sample of hair before full application.
  • The Hair dye mixture is not effective for body tattoos.
  • Do not combine with chemical hair dye. Wait at least one month after a chemical dye before using henna on hair. If the hair has been previously dyed, it may take up to 2-3 applications for the henna dye to provide the best results.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. If dye gets into your eyes, flush with water and contact a physician if irritation continues.
  • Wear an old shirt or cover up with an old towel to avoid henna stains on clothing.
  • You can wrap a towel on top of your shower cap to trap more heat and help with the dye transfer.
  • Henna dye gives red undertones to dark or black hair.
  • Henna dye transforms blonde and grey hair into red or orange.

What You Need:

  • 5ml of essential oil; for best results, use tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus
  • 3 tbsp of sugar; best is natural cane sugar
  • 1 cup of distilled water at room temp
  • Glass bowl
  • Spoon
  • Cling wrap
  • Henna cone or application bottle

Steps:

  • Stir 100g of henna powder and 3 tbsp of sugar in your bowl
  • Add 1 cup of water and mix into a thick paste. Cover with cling wrap and let sit for 30 minutes; this will allow the water to absorb
  • Add 5ml of essential oil. Mix thoroughly until all lumps are gone and you’ve reached a pudding-like consistency
  • Cover again with cling wrap and store in a warm place for at least 6 hours (inside cabinet or above fridge). This time will allow full dye release to occur.
  • Mix henna paste one more time and transfer it into a henna cone or application bottle.

Pro Tips:

  • We recommend testing in a small area first in case of a potential allergic reaction to the essential oils.
  • Do not apply body tattoo henna mixture to hair. It can cause your hair and scalp to dry out.
